Albert Nygren Jr.

Obituary of Albert George Nygren Jr.

Al Nygren, St. Paul, Minnesota, (age 80) died of cancer on August 11, 2023. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 3/20/1943 and graduated from Boys’ Technical High School. He also attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

Al entered the U.S. AirForce in 1961 and was assigned to Eliason Air Force Base, Alaska, where he worked on a nuclear missile program for four years. After leaving Alaska, Al lived with other Catholic youth in a community called Botega Logos. The group lived in a farmhouse near Huberty, Wisconsin. They worked for farmers in the area during daytime, but focused their lives on simplicity, prayer and meditation. Al became a Catholic while living with these people.

Nygren moved to Minnesota in the early 1970’s. He graduated from the Lakewood College Nursing Program and became a registered nurse. He worked at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis, Mounds Park Hospital, and St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota.

Al loved the natural world. He knew the names of trees and birds, appreciated sunrises and sunsets, changes of seasons and the lives of animals. He hunted deer in the Fall, fished with his brother in Canada.

As a young boy, Al received a call from God to begin attending church, so he, his mother and his brother started attending services. His Mom became a Sunday School teacher at a neighborhood church.

For the last 10 years he has used a wheelchair. Al appreciated the weekly service, visits by the priest and members of the church, held by the Church of St. Pius X, while living at The Waters of White Bear Lake, Minnesota.

Al is survived by his brother, Ed Nygren (Pewaukee, Wisconsin), sister-in-law Lucy Nygren, Nephew Bradley Nygren. His great niece and nephew are Amber and Andrew Nygren. Alice and Lloyd Nygren, his aunt and uncle, live in Montello, Wisconsin. His AirForce buddy survives as Jack Janicki, (Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.) A childhood friend, George Lichey lives in Waukesha, Wisconsin. His former wife, Lois Anderson, lives in Shoreview, Mn. He has many friends in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
