Obituary of Helene N. Peters

Hélène Nahas Peters (1919-2020) educator, lecturer and world traveler, was reared and educated on three continents: Africa, Europe and North America. Born in Heliopolis, Egypt and raised in France, she received her M.A. in French from the University of Toulouse, and her PhD in French Literature from the University of Minnesota. A professor of French and Department Chair at Macalester College, her creation of an undergraduate study abroad program was one of her most prized accomplishments. She was past President of the Minnesota Chapter of the Alliance Française, and of the American Association of Teachers of French (Minnesota Chapter). The French Government awarded her the rank of Officier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques. She was a devoted wife to John Peters, and together they raised two daughters, Claire Thometz (Alan) and Sylvia Tag. She adored and doted on her granddaughters Emily, Arwen, Katie, and Ruth (Dakota). Her cross-cultural legacy will live on through the family, friends, and students she cherished. Memorials preferred to: Alliance Française Minneapolis/St Paul, www.afmsp.org
