Bruce “Bruce Almighty” Matthees is kind of a big deal, people know him.
Many hearts were broken on June 14, 2018, when he decided it was time to leave Methodist Hospital and take the party to heaven.
Bruce started the party on Halloween 1956, when he was born to Roy and Alyce Matthees in Zumbrota. In 1975, he graduated from Zumbrota High School. Shortly after, Bruce married Roxanne and had two sons, Kory and Brad. After high school, he worked for Ramstad’s as a heavy equipment operator. He also worked for Goodhue County Highway Department. In 1990, he purchased Matthees Midtown Texaco and operated it until 2015.
He met the love of his life, Rita, in 2002 and they spent 15 happy years together.
Bruce worked hard and partied hard until he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2015.
Bruce enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, spending time at the cabin, golf (which he was not good at), visits from the neighbor “grandkids”, any movie with Will Ferrell, and spending time with his many friends and family members. He also loved lamp and carpet.
He was a dedicated member of the Zumbrota Snowmobile Club and spent many winters grooming trails with Rita. He was a longtime volunteer EMT for the Zumbrota Ambulance and a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
Bruce is survived by his partner of 15 years, Rita; sons, Kory (Tara) and Brad (Taryn); step-daughters, Breanna (Ben) and Brittany (Matt); mother, Alyce; siblings, Steve (Marsha), Cindy (Dick), Mark (Trish), Doug (Cindy); numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends, and loyal customers.
Bruce is preceded in death by his father, Roy; nephew, Peter; and one of his great friends, Slippy.
A visitation will be held 4-8:00PM, Monday, June 18th at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 1549 East Ave, Zumbrota. A celebration of Bruce’s life will be held 11AM, Tuesday, June 19th, 2018, with visitation one hour prior, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Pastor Eric Westlake officiating. Burial will follow at the Zumbrota Cemetery.
